PR Woodhouse explains the wonders of nature to his grandsons , John and William Rolleston

South Pacific Sera Limited (SPS) was established on Blue Cliffs Station in 1988 by John Rolleston and Dr William Rolleston CNZM, grandsons of Dr Randal Woodhouse, to produce top quality donor animal blood, serum and protein products for use in therapeutic, cell culture, microbiology and immunology applications around the world.

The company has expanded its operations and product lines over the years and now manufactures a range of biological products for export at its plant at 26 Kennels Road, Washdyke, Timaru.

SPS takes advantage of South Canterbury’s geographical isolation where good climate and New Zealand’s good border control ensure it remains free of many significant diseases affecting animals. New Zealand is recognised as the world's premiere source of animal derived bio-reagents. The country has no List A (OIE) diseases and is free of classical scrapie and BSE.

This protection allows SPS to locate its operations in the ideal site to produce products, where quality and pureness are essential.  SPS is located in a diverse agricultural region and is ideally situated within two hour’s drive of the three South Island Universities which are critical generators of high quality staff and new ideas.

SPS supports The Woodhouse Scholars Programme to provide educational opportunities for young people from  South Canterbury to achieve excellence in their study of the biological sciences and the innovative application of biological science in the South Canterbury economy.
